BANGOR, Maine (WABI) - A First Alert continues to be in effect this evening and overnight as sleet and freezing rain produces an icy and wet mess for all. The whole state apart from the Southern Coast is under a Winter Weather Advisory this evening through tomorrow morning.

This evening, snow continues up North, while sleet and freezing rain impact the rest of the state. Only Southern Maine will proceed forward with just rainfall as of 6pm. By midnight, a wintry mix is expected for most. Snow in Northern Maine will turn over to a wintry mix, while rainfall works up towards much of the I-95 corridor and along the coast. Just before sunrise, consistent rainfall will span across Downeast Maine, the I-95 corridor, and coast, while Northern Maine holds onto freezing rain. Precipitation will become more scattered during the morning after sunrise Monday.

Another inch or two of snow is expected up North before midnight. Ice accumulation will continue tonight into tomorrow morning. A tenth to a quarter of an inch is possible, with the highest amounts in the Western Mountains and Central Highlands. Roads will be icy and slick tonight into tomorrow morning. Be careful on the Monday morning commute as accumulated ice is still likely on roads, especially farther up North. A few downed power lines and trees are possible, but power outages are expected to be widespread.

Warm temperatures filter in tonight into tomorrow morning due to southeasterly flow. Overnight low temps will vary from the mid 20s to mid 30s. Temps continue to rise through Monday, with highs from the mid 40s to mid 50s. This will help melt much of the ice that accumulated, so road conditions will be much better on the back half of Monday.

Monday morning will bring rain for most while some mixed precipitation, likely freezing rain, is still expected up North. Mixed precip will exit entirely by midday. Rain is on and off throughout Monday with some downpours at times. A cold front enters Monday afternoon, continuing into the evening and overnight. This will mostly impact the I-95 corridor and coast, where heavy rain is expected at times. Northern areas will have a quieter Monday evening and overnight. Winds will pick up on Monday as well, with SSW gusts up to 30-35 mph.

The cold front has trended farther south, so most precipitation is likely to exit by sunrise on Tuesday. There is a tiny chance for some light snow or mixed precip showers on the back end of the system Tuesday morning. Skies will start off mostly cloudy before mostly sunny skies are expected during the afternoon and evening. High temps on Tuesday will vary from the low 30s to mid 40s. Winds remain strong, with NW gusts up to 30-35 mph.

Quieter and cooler conditions linger into Wednesday with partly to mostly sunny skies and temps in the 30s to low 40s. More wintry precipitation chances are expected to return to the forecast Wednesday night and continue through Thursday. Thursday’s precip will likely start with snow during the overnight and morning, before transitioning over to a wintry mix and then to rain in the afternoon/evening. High temps on Thursday will vary in the 40s to low 50s.

Quiet and warmer weather with partly to mostly cloudy skies and high temps in the 40s and 50s are expected Friday and Saturday. Another wintry system is possible next Sunday and Monday.
