Everyone needs a good vegan chicken broth seasoning in their pantry! Now you can make this amazing broth with easy-to-find, budget-friendly ingredients, and keep it in powder form in your pantry, ready to use for whatever you need!
You'll notice that many of my recipe posts call for Vegan Chicken-like Seasoning.
Traditionally, I have chosen to use McKay's Chicken Style Broth for this purpose. I continue to love and use this brand. It tastes great!! However, it can get a bit pricey, and not everyone has access to it. So here is my no-oil, sodium adjustable, super tasty, vegan chicken broth seasoning!!
What do you need to make this Vegan Chicken Style Seasoning?
- nutritional yeast flakes
- seasoned salt, such as Lawry's
- garlic salt
- onion powder
- celery salt
- sage
- turmeric
- paprika
- summer savory - more about this below!
- parsley
A note about celery salt: Don't be afraid to use it, even if you HATE celery! Celery salt is the secret weapon of this chicken style seasoning. Combine that with savory, sage, parsley...this just tastes SO good - and so 'poultry'-like! You're going to want to put it on everything!
Common Question - What is Savory?
Summer Savory is an herb that I think you'll love. You'll find it either in rubbed or leaf form - either will work. It's described as being an herb whose flavor is a cross between marjoram, mint, and thyme, and is widely used in dried herb combos (so you may have had it before without realizing it!
You can get savory here, but you can always use more sage and parsley instead, or a combination of thyme and marjoram.
Steps to make this Vegan Chicken Style Broth powder:
Just gather your ingredients, measure and dump them into a blender or food processor.
Whiz everything around a few times, and voila! Now you have Vegan Chicken Seasoning!!
How to use Vegan Chicken-style seasoning powder:
Use 1 heaping teaspoon of your new Vegan Chicken-style seasoning powder per cup of water for vegan chicken broth.
Now you can use this chicken-style seasoning to:
- make countless vegan soup recipes
- make these delicious black eyed pea tofu bowls
- season scrambled tofu and savory oatmeal
- flavor vegan gluten steaks
- sprinkle over popcorn
- act as bullion
How to store this Vegan Chicken Seasoning:
This Vegan Chicken-like Seasoning will keep for a very long time in a cool/dry place in your pantry, so don't hesitate to double or even triple the recipe. The yield for one recipe is approximately 1 cup of dry seasoning.

Sally
I'm looking for a vegetarian chicken broth that is very low sodium (half or less than what is listed here). What would be the easiest way to substitute ingredients to further reduce the sodium in this recipe? Thanks so much!

Hi Sally, I think the best way to reduce sodium is to add less salt. It will be less flavorful, but the spices/herbs should give it flavor!

Thank you so much for this recipe! It’s delicious. I love Trader Joe’s Vegan Chickenless Seasoning and this is even better. I love that I can make it at home.Reply

Hi Where would I get vegan seasoning salt never saw it

Most seasoned salts available at your local grocery should be vegan. I'd check the ingredients to be sure tho! I often use the Johnny's seasoned salt that I purchase at Costco. Hope that helps!

Thank you so much for this recipe. I am making a pasta salad , for Christmas Eve, made with dried cranberries, pecans,& celery (not my favorite either) with baked young jack fruit, which will be in a marinade of maple syrup & chicken seasoning. I do not have summer savory or sage in my spice cabinet but will be sure to get some tomorrow.

This looks good. I'm going to try it. I've been using one from one of Miyoko's recipes and it's great w/no added salt which is nice. i'm all out, so today I'm going to make this one.

I'm anxious to try this because I love McKay's as well! I found another recipe from Kyong Weathersby that is pretty close to McKays. I love that your recipe has sage in it and I'll be trying this soon! By the way, what is savory?

Wanda, thanks for your comment. Summer Savory is an herb that I think you'll love. You'll find it either in rubbed or leaf form - either will work. It's described as being a cross between several herb flavors, and is widely used in dried herb combos!

I live in the UK and summer savoury is not available here (as far as I know). What would be a good alternative?
Many thanksReply
Kate
Hi Tas, you can substitute any herb you like (or a combination of these - a few pinches each): thyme, marjoram, dried basil, dill, or oregano.
